Casa da Destilaria village house, including an old charming distillery and several spacious outbuildings. Many original, historic and interesting features in a traditional Portuguese-style property with extraordinary potential . Wide country views. Good access. Village location close to the historic town of Tomar. Stunning property for a very low price in view of its amazing potential !
A unique opportunity to acquire an unusual, ground-level property with extraordinary potential for refurbishment, and to use as a main residence, a holiday let, for a tourism enterprise, or even a bar/ café/restaurant.
This property once belonged to the owner’s family, who used it as his main residence, and the outbuildings as a distillery to manufacture fig brandy, a well-known local beverage. This property’s original, historic and interesting features reveal its extraordinary potential at many levels. The premises still contain the original equipment and fittings, including the furnace, but haven’t been used for this purpose for quite a while. The distillery space could easily be turned into a café/bar/restaurant or music venue, keeping all or some of the original features for a truly quaint and interesting space.
The entrance to the building is through a traditional cobble-paved courtyard, leading to the distillery on the right and the house on the left.
At the ground-level there are a bathroom, two kitchens, one with a walk-in ladder, six bedrooms, three very large living-rooms, one with a fireplace and a large bar, two large outbuildings which were once used as stables and barns, and a cellar next to the distillery -this still has the large furnace to heat the still as well as a smokehouse.
The oldest and original part of the house has traditional floorboards and wood-panneled ceilings. One of the kitchens in this property is in this part of the dwelling, and boasts a beautiful Edwardian feature fire place where the stove was once placed. The floor is tiled with period tiles which could be saved and restored. From the main or back entrance to this part of the house there is a corridor with all the bedrooms and one of the living-rooms arranged on both sides. The back door leads to the extended part of the house where the two living-room areas and the second kitchen and walk-in ladder are located.
Although this is a traditional ground-level house, with a typical Portuguese clay-tiled roof, part of the house was extended some time ago, where there are now two of the large living-rooms with a bar and one of the kitchens with walk-in ladder. There was then an attempt to build a second-floor on this ground-floor extension but the works weren’t completed. The brick walls raised above the extension could easily be knocked down to create a roof terrace with stunning views of Tomar and the surrounding countryside. Alternatively, this construction could also be completed to create an even larger living area!
The property has two entrance gates. One could be used for vehicle access to the property; there is plenty of space inside for parking of several vehicles.
The house has mains water and electricity and a water harvesting facility in the distillery.
This is indeed a stunning property for a very low price in view of its amazing potential !
