A unique opportunity to purchase a deceptively large olive press, probably over 200 years old, which according to the latest land survey and floor plans has a total area of at least 279 m2. This area does not include the ruins of a previously covered patio with at least 32 m2 and on two levels. The olive press is set on a plot of land with 794 m2 and with a 36-metre stream frontage.
In addition to the main room where the stone mills and the entire extraction system are located, there were once other storerooms to store raw materials, the olive oil and the olive pulp. Given the size of the olive press, the building must also have included accommodation facilities for the workers such as one or two bedrooms and a kitchen. The cycle of olive picking and oil extraction in Portugal can last between two to three months, so the press must have worked uninterruptedly during that time period.
These are assumptions based on our knowledge of how traditional oil presses still work nowadays in the Sardoal and Abrantes area (24 hours a day 7 days a week, during olive picking and olive oil production season) and on reports from local elders. However, these are just guesses as those who worked at this particular olive press have long passed away.
With good access roads, excellent location and beautiful views of the stream which once powered this olive press, this property is situated only 200 metres away from the nearest house connected to mains water and electricity.
