Location
There are megalithic monuments, Celtic forts, Roman roads and bridges in the immediate vicinity of the village of Mouriscas as well as clear signs of its Moorish heritage (e.g. the ancient irrigation methods inherited from the Moors and still being used in local gardens and small farms).
The oldest olive tree in Europe, with 3, 350 years old, the Oliveira do Mouchão, and hundreds or thousands of other ancient olive trees in the area attest to the antiquity and importance of the olive grove in this region.
Mouriscas has two olive oil presses one of which uses only traditional methods of oil extraction.
Other traditional crops were the fig (for brandy manufacturing) and, of course, grapes for winemaking. Family farming was and still is practised in the region where countless orchards are seen scattered all over the region displaying a vast array of fruit trees such as lemon, orange, persimmon, apple, pear and plum trees.
